Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Customs at Wattay International Airport runs a green/red channel system with a measured hand. Officers eye your profile, then pick random bags for inspection. Most people walk straight through.
Prohibited Items
- Narcotics and illegal drugs, severe penalties including life imprisonment
- Pornography in any form, digital, print, video, will be seized and can lead to charges.
- Counterfeit goods, currency, documents, and branded items
- Weapons and ammunition, including replicas and decorative items without permit
- Explosives and fireworks, professional and consumer grade
- Ivory, rhino horn, and certain timbers arrive only if you hold a valid CITES permit. Without it, they're confiscated.
- Cultural artifacts without export permits from country of origin
Restricted Items
- Prescription pills stay in original blister packs and travel with a doctor's letter. Psychotropics need advance clearance from the Lao Ministry of Health.
- Recreational drones are not welcome above Vientiane unless you register first with the Lao authorities.
- Satellite phones cannot be carried in or used without prior approval from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
- Your personal Bible or prayer beads are fine. Boxes of tracts for distribution require official consent.
- Plants and farm produce need a phytosanitary certificate. Fresh fruit, vegetables, and loose seeds are pulled aside for inspection.
Health Requirements
Health checks for Vientiane are light for most visitors, no shots are compulsory unless you're coming from a yellow-fever zone. Still, the tropical heat and the Mekong's food and insect risks call for sensible precautions.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: only if you're flying in from affected parts of Africa or South America. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after the jab and lasts for life.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Hepatitis A: recommended for everyone, since the virus travels in food and water.
- Hepatitis B, recommended for longer stays or potential medical exposure
- Typhoid: smart cover if you plan to eat beyond the big hotel restaurants in Vientiane.
- Japanese Encephalitis: advised for rural stays longer than a month, during the monsoon.
- Rabies: get it if you'll be around animals or heading into remote villages.
- Stay current on routine shots: measles-mumps-rubella, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio, and the yearly flu vaccine.
Health Insurance
Buy travel health insurance before you board. Clinics in Vientiane fall short of Western or Thai standards. Serious cases are medevaced to Bangkok or Singapore at costs that can top $50,000. Some hospitals demand cash up front or a guarantee letter from your insurer. Double-check that the policy lists Laos, several regional plans quietly leave it out.

Children flying without both parents need a notarized letter from the absent parent(s) authorizing the trip, plus photocopies of the parents' passports. Single parents, grandparents, or other relatives get asked most often. Carry the child's birth certificate to prove the relationship and adoption papers if applicable. Vaccination rules for kids entering Vientiane stick to the standard schedule, no extras required.
Bring your dog or cat into Laos only with a health certificate signed within 10 days of departure by a veterinarian in the country of origin. That paper must state the animal is free from contagious diseases and carries a rabies shot given at least 30 days yet no more than 12 months before arrival. Alert the Lao Department of Livestock and Fisheries ahead of time. Officials at Wattay International Airport can still order quarantine on the spot. Commercial pet shipments need extra permits. Birds, reptiles, and exotic creatures face tight rules, ring the Lao embassy before you even think about flying them in.
Most tourist visas and visa-free stamps can be stretched once for 30 extra days at the Immigration Department on Lane Xang Avenue in Vientiane, running about $2 per day. Need more time? Leave and come back. If you expect to stay past 60 days in total, secure a business visa (B2) or long-term tourist visa through a Lao embassy before you land, or sign up for a language course that sponsors an education visa. Overstay fines hover around $10 per day. Anyone plotting a long spell in Vientiane should speak with immigration officers early to map out the choices.
