Vientiane Entry Requirements

Vientiane Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Touch down at Wattay International Airport, 3 km from Vientiane's centre, and the Mekong's languid capital greets you with frangipani-scented air and a terminal that feels more like a provincial bus station than a national gateway. The stairway from the plane delivers you straight onto warm tarmac where the tropical humidity wraps around you like a familiar blanket. Inside, immigration moves at the same unhurried rhythm that defines the city itself. Expect 30, 45 minutes from door to curb if your papers are straight. There are no escalators, no shuttles, no maze, just a single corridor that funnels you through health checks, passport control, baggage reclaim and customs in a straight line. With most hotels a ten-minute ride away, your first night in Vientiane can begin before the sweat on your shirt has even dried. Before you board the flight, make sure your passport still has six months left to run and at least one blank page. Rules shift without warning and Vientiane's welcome mat is friendly but not fool-proof.

Arrival Process

Wattay International Airport's single-storey terminal keeps things simple: follow the signs in Lao, English and French and you can't get lost. How long each step takes depends on how many planes have landed at once.

1
Health Screening
Temperature check and visual health inspection upon exiting the aircraft. Thermal scanners monitor for fever. Staff in white coats direct passengers to immigration hall.
2
Immigration Control
Present passport, visa/eVisa approval, and arrival card to immigration officer. Officers typically ask purpose of visit and length of stay. Stamp indicates entry date and permitted duration. The sound of rubber stamps and paper shuffling fills the modest hall.
3
Baggage Claim
Single carousel serves all arriving flights. Trolleys available for a small deposit. Monitor displays flight numbers. Bags typically appear within 15 minutes of immigration clearance.
4
Customs Inspection
Green channel for nothing to declare. Red channel for goods requiring declaration. Random bag checks occur. Exit leads directly to arrival hall with currency exchange, SIM card vendors, and taxi services.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must have minimum 6 months validity beyond planned departure and at least one blank page for entry stamp. Required at all stages from check-in through immigration.

Physical visa in passport or printed eVisa approval letter. Required at immigration counter. Digital copies on phones not accepted.
Arrival/Departure Card
Distributed on aircraft or available at immigration. Must be completed with hotel address in Vientiane and flight details. Keep departure portion for exit.
Proof of Onward Travel
Return or onward flight ticket occasionally requested. Print or digital copy acceptable. Required for visa-free entries and sometimes for visa holders.

Hotel booking for first nights in Vientiane sometimes requested, for those without fixed itinerary. Print or digital copy acceptable.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Fill in the arrival card while you're still in the air. The crew hands them out as the plane drops toward Vientiane. Handing it over ready at immigration shaves minutes off the queue.
Have the exact USD amount for the visa-on-arrival fee. If you hand over a larger note, the change you get back will be calculated at a rate that favors the desk, not you.
The second the officer hands back your stamped passport, snap a photo of the visa page and the entry stamp. Store one copy in the cloud, keep another printout in your daypack, and leave the originals in the hotel safe for the rest of your Vientiane stay.
Land before 10 AM and you'll glide through immigration. Wait until the afternoon wave from Bangkok and Hanoi and the hall turns into a slow-moving snake.
Don't lose the little departure-card stub. Hotels in Vientiane may ask for it, roadside police checks sometimes do, and without it you won't get past exit immigration.

Customs & Duty-Free

Customs at Wattay International Airport runs a green/red channel system with a measured hand. Officers eye your profile, then pick random bags for inspection. Most people walk straight through.

Alcohol
2 liters of wine or 1 liter of spirits
You must be 18 years or older. Anything over the duty-free limit gets hit with roughly 30, 50% of the declared value, and opened bottles in your luggage invite extra questions.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco
You must be 18 years or older. Lao-made cigarettes are everywhere in Vientiane and cost far less than any imported brand on the shelf.
Currency
Declaration required for amounts exceeding $2,000 USD or equivalent
Bring in as much foreign currency as you like. But anything above the threshold must be written on the arrival form. Skip the line and you risk confiscation or a fine on the way out. Lao Kip is capped at 2,000,000 LAK.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and gifts up to $300 USD total value
Goods that look destined for resale attract duty. One laptop or camera for personal use sails through. Three identical phones will raise eyebrows.

Prohibited Items

  • Narcotics and illegal drugs, severe penalties including life imprisonment
  • Pornography in any form, digital, print, video, will be seized and can lead to charges.
  • Counterfeit goods, currency, documents, and branded items
  • Weapons and ammunition, including replicas and decorative items without permit
  • Explosives and fireworks, professional and consumer grade
  • Ivory, rhino horn, and certain timbers arrive only if you hold a valid CITES permit. Without it, they're confiscated.
  • Cultural artifacts without export permits from country of origin

Restricted Items

  • Prescription pills stay in original blister packs and travel with a doctor's letter. Psychotropics need advance clearance from the Lao Ministry of Health.
  • Recreational drones are not welcome above Vientiane unless you register first with the Lao authorities.
  • Satellite phones cannot be carried in or used without prior approval from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
  • Your personal Bible or prayer beads are fine. Boxes of tracts for distribution require official consent.
  • Plants and farm produce need a phytosanitary certificate. Fresh fruit, vegetables, and loose seeds are pulled aside for inspection.

Health Requirements

Health checks for Vientiane are light for most visitors, no shots are compulsory unless you're coming from a yellow-fever zone. Still, the tropical heat and the Mekong's food and insect risks call for sensible precautions.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: only if you're flying in from affected parts of Africa or South America. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after the jab and lasts for life.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A: recommended for everyone, since the virus travels in food and water.
  • Hepatitis B, recommended for longer stays or potential medical exposure
  • Typhoid: smart cover if you plan to eat beyond the big hotel restaurants in Vientiane.
  • Japanese Encephalitis: advised for rural stays longer than a month, during the monsoon.
  • Rabies: get it if you'll be around animals or heading into remote villages.
  • Stay current on routine shots: measles-mumps-rubella, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio, and the yearly flu vaccine.

Health Insurance

Buy travel health insurance before you board. Clinics in Vientiane fall short of Western or Thai standards. Serious cases are medevaced to Bangkok or Singapore at costs that can top $50,000. Some hospitals demand cash up front or a guarantee letter from your insurer. Double-check that the policy lists Laos, several regional plans quietly leave it out.

Current Health Requirements: Screening rules at Wattay International Airport shift with regional outbreaks. As of January 2025, COVID tests and vaccination proof are no longer needed to enter Vientiane. Keep an eye on bulletins from the Lao Ministry of Health and your own government. Requirements flip fast when a new threat surfaces.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children flying without both parents need a notarized letter from the absent parent(s) authorizing the trip, plus photocopies of the parents' passports. Single parents, grandparents, or other relatives get asked most often. Carry the child's birth certificate to prove the relationship and adoption papers if applicable. Vaccination rules for kids entering Vientiane stick to the standard schedule, no extras required.

Traveling with Pets

Bring your dog or cat into Laos only with a health certificate signed within 10 days of departure by a veterinarian in the country of origin. That paper must state the animal is free from contagious diseases and carries a rabies shot given at least 30 days yet no more than 12 months before arrival. Alert the Lao Department of Livestock and Fisheries ahead of time. Officials at Wattay International Airport can still order quarantine on the spot. Commercial pet shipments need extra permits. Birds, reptiles, and exotic creatures face tight rules, ring the Lao embassy before you even think about flying them in.

Extended Stays

Most tourist visas and visa-free stamps can be stretched once for 30 extra days at the Immigration Department on Lane Xang Avenue in Vientiane, running about $2 per day. Need more time? Leave and come back. If you expect to stay past 60 days in total, secure a business visa (B2) or long-term tourist visa through a Lao embassy before you land, or sign up for a language course that sponsors an education visa. Overstay fines hover around $10 per day. Anyone plotting a long spell in Vientiane should speak with immigration officers early to map out the choices.
